(In)Dependent

Independance. Probably a very well misunderstood term. What is it? What are our expectations of it? Growing up, being independant was very important to me. It was one of those values that my parents imbibed in me. My dad would keep reiterating how important it was to be independent. He would let me bicycle to school, go to banks and post offices when I was a kid. He used to tell me that i should be able to do every task on my own.

Somewhere along the way independence became an obsession. Independence is easy when its easily defined. Like say financial independence. What about emotional independence? Can we ever be truly emotionally independent? Maybe not. As human beings we are dependent, we crave attention, we have this need to be liked, to like, to be pampered, to be loved. The fact that it does not always happen that way is the cruel , brutal truth. It is a life lesson that we refuse to learn. Or is it misplaced hope. I do not know.

Would it not be awesome if we get everything we want, exactly the same way we want it! Wishful thinking, I know. But I am reminded of Calvin.

"Happiness is not good enough, I demand Euphoria"

Not sure why am reading all this so late.. anyway.. This is such a wonderful thought.. Emotional Independence.. I personally believe if you are emotionally independent you are Howard Roark :).. Is it impossible as you ask?.. perhaps the destination is far enough to gauge the distance or the likeness of reaching it, but it sure is possible and I'm sure the path when travelled can at least be enlightening if not attainable now!! The most endearing fact that such a journey can make one realize is acceptance on what we are - the naked truth about our own selves.. which leads to the correction of weak spots and taking pride of the good ones.. and above all take emotionally independent decisions .. all of this is worth giving a try.. all we have is one lifetime to experiment..

Nice that you brought it up!!
