Books in 2009

Posted by Nivi on 10:21 AM
So I decided that the best way to do most things is to make a plan! And stick to the plan , hopefully.

So I have decided to go back to my book devouring days, the ones where I went from one book to the next.Eloor library in chennai was my best friend at those times.

So the ones I want to read this year ( keeping in mind there is just 6 more months left)

1.Ponniyin Selvan I - Done - Loved Loved Loved it. Cant wait for the next.

2. Ponniyin Selvan II

2.Great Expectations

3.Satanic Verses

4.3 cups of Tea

5. White tiger

6.The curious incident of the dog in the night time - Brilliant Read

7.Roots

8. Heroes of the Valley

9. The Lost Symbol ( when it is out)

I know this is going to be very hard. But well Ill be happy even if i get through 6-7 of them. Let us see. I am now almost through Ponniyin Selvan part 1 and am kicking myself for not reading more tamil novels. What a book! What language! I am bowled over. I already have most of the other books, that i wanted to read, I have been looking for them in old bookstores and amazon.I like owning books. I fancy myself having a great library one day.

Anyways lets see how far I go. I wont forget to update :)

jus went thro the list...

kinda diverse books... might catch a handful of them myself. of course "lost symbol" is a must. I was really interested in "curious incident of the dog", "white Tiger" and "Heroes of the Valley"

btw where do u get ponniyin selvan? have always wanted to read it

Ponniyin Selvan, my mom sent it. Dude its a must read. You should read it. As a tamil student, you would appreciate it in various levels. It has got everything that we read and relished in poetry.

As for Heroes of the Valley is Jonathan Stroud, the Bartimaeus trilogy guy's next book.

White Tiger is the Booker Prize one. So out of curiosity.

Curious incident of the dog ... is supposed to be a great book. Its one of the must read books before you die. So wanted to give it a shot. Will let you know how it turns out.

Have read great expectations, its decent. Would like to read satanic verses w/o kshyam knowing about it :P

3 cups of Tea and The curious incident of the dog in the night time for obvious reasons :)

Dont know much about Heroes of the valley

I want to read 'The Lost symbol' too :)

I liked "Great Expectations" too, but i would def recommend "White Tiger" simply for Aravind's style of writing. As for content, would not like to reveal anything about the book... :)

PS is an awesome read, agreed. I hope you are reading the old collated Kalki magazine pages, rather than a pulished book...it is an experience altogether, what with Maniam Selvam's paintings. If you liked PS, you would like Alai Osai too!

@Suchi

You bet i am reading the collated Kalki pages :) Maniam's pictures make it a better experience.

Also its fun to catch a few other articles in old Kalki, like old movie reviews, jokes, other short stories.

Its fun this way.

@Bhaiyya

Yes, eagerly awaiting. Hopefully its not a dud.

@Aks

Hopefully he does not tread the same path as other authors of Indian origin to win great prizes.Roy and Lahiri. They tend to write really sad stories. But I am curios. So will read it.

I am still reading Ponniyin Selvan.. its a big book.. still in Pudhu vellam adthyaayam 34. Its on the internet at http://ta.wikisource.org/wiki/பொன்னியின்_செல்வன்

Satanic Verses is a good one too. His english is hard to understand though.

@Bka

that is brilliant. I am finding it hard to fight temptation. Cause I want to read them in the collated Kalki format with pictures and everything.

waiting for my mum to send the next book. I am done with Pudu Vellam.It ends with such a note that i cant wait to start the next one.

You are right about Satanic Verses. He is too hard to comprehend.

hey thats cool- we have 3 books common in our list- I loved white tiger and really wanna read satanic verses and 3 cups of tea.

I don't think I could get through ponniyan selvan in a yr so thats not in my list :) But I'm trying to read more Indian authors too- feel like I've never really given them a chance.

good luck with your book list

Nice to see you reading PS

My initial Tamil historical novels were Sandilyan's, when I was in school (1970s). When I tried Kalki at that time (with PS), I could not go beyond the first few pages for some strange reason.

Much later, I took it up again (early 1990s) and found it unputdownable. It is a must read for anybody who knows Tamil and claims reading a pastime.

The best way to read it is the bound Kalki serialized versions. Maniam did the pictures when it was first written. Many decades later, Kalki magazine ran a reprint. This time Maniam Selvan (Maniam's son) did the pictures. I think that is what one of your friends referred to in her comments.

Happy reading
