Delhi 6

My opinion of Delhi 6 has brought up widespread disapproval from many friends of mine. Diverse opinions are what make up for conversations on dinner table and I am all for it. However seeing such widespread disapproval among my friends, I decided to write down why according to me it was a brilliant attempt and why I personally loved the movie albeit its flaws.
Delhi 6 captures in a nut shell, human nature. The movie attempts to do the same with reference to Kala Bandhar or Black Monkey. Not only does it poetically say how rumour builds an over hauling iamge of perhaps a non existant monkey, but also brings out the various insecurities that an average Indian has. THe movie also shows how sensitive Indians are when it comes to religion, how it evokes the monkey in all of them and how insecure we are.
Every character to the exception of Ab(Jr) was well developed. Be it the nice gullible sweet shop owner, the attention seeking brother, the grumpy old fashioned Om Puri, the egoistic policeman, they were well sketched. so well sketched that when they did what they did towards the end, you could understand why each one did so.
The subtleity of certain scenes I thought was brilliant. For instance the scene where Ram and Shiva bow in front of the politican and the one where a character supports castesim saying " He is Lord, He can do anything" when Rama eats from Sabari's hand were sheer brillaince. The Taj scenes brought a smile to my face. I remembered myself when Abhishek just stood frozen after his first glimpse. I stood still for seconds when I my eyes first met the Taj. I thought the Masakalli reference was cute. Sonam Kapoor did an able job. One could sympathize with her situation. I liked the fact that it was a movie with characters instead of being a movie with a hero.
The flagrant flaws as I saw them were the following
AB(Sr) . I agreed with the scene where Abished had a close encounter with death, but why did he have to meet his grandad, thye never had any relationship! I dont know. But after reading "Five people you meet in heaven", I sometime think, maybe he did in some in extricable way.
The editing : Editing was definitely flawed. There were some major hitches. The scenes did not flow from one to another. It was blotched. A big mistake this one was.
The songs, it was almost a blasphemy for not including ARR's fine compositions.
THe romantic angle between AB and Sonam could have had more depth. I could understand why she fell for him but not vice versa.
But beyond all this Delhi 6 was honest about what it wanted to say and in a way poetic too. To me, the fact that it chose a subject as deep as this and with so many layers was a victory. It had a script and the script was great. I loved the fact that it said "Everyone has grey shades and when provoked can act un predictably" . I loved the background score.
I loved Delhi 6.
